How to Use Twitter? (The Basics)
Twitter is a micro blogging and social networking platform. This covers the twitter basics on usage. Unlike Facebook, twitter is public by default. With over 330 million active users monthly, the reach from Twitter can be huge. Twitter is all about short and sweet. With limitations on characters, number of images per tweet and video length, it is all about conveying message in a short and precise way.
To start with basics, let us see the basic things we should know like Tweet, Retweet, Follow, Search and Hashtags.
Tweet is like the post in Facebook, here the character length can only be up to 280 characters. We can include 4 photos, a GIF or a video in one tweet. The video can only be upto 2 minute 20 seconds. In certain cases we can make a request to upload videos upto 10 minutes. Otherwise, we should be content in giving video links. This is very important feature to be noted under twitter basics manual.
Retweet is like sharing in other platforms. If you want to share something you like and want people to know something related to your brand, then Retweet works best. Simply put, A tweet that you share publicly with followers is a Retweet.
Retweet with comment is also an option where you want to re-post one of your older Tweets because it is relevant again or Retweet your replies to other people when you want to make sure all of your followers see it.
Follow option is to follow accounts and people on Twitter. By this way you can know about activities happening around you. You can track the competitors and their activities.
By searching for topic keywords or hashtags, you can follow ongoing conversations about breaking news or personal interests.
Entering search query in the search box shows results with a combination of tweets, accounts, photos and videos. You can filter these results by clicking Top, Latest, People, Photos and videos.
There are also search filter options like – From anyone or people you follow and Anywhere or near you and also an option for Advanced search.
Advanced Search :
It has options for Words – (tweets containing exact words, phrases, specific hashtag, etc.)
People – You can enter the account name to get tweets only from that account.
Places & Dates – This option allows us to search tweets sent from a specific geographic location, a city or country. Dates allow us to choose the specific date ranges for the tweets.
A hashtag is written with a # symbol and is used to index keywords or topics on Twitter. This allows people to easily follow topics they are interested in.
Use hashtag symbol before a relevant keyword or phrase in a Tweet to categorize those Tweets and it helps to show them more easily in Twitter search. Clicking or tapping on a hashtag in any message shows you other Tweets that include that hashtag.
When a hashtag becomes popular, it becomes trending topics. Hashtags are also useful when we search for trending topics. The trending topics include hashtags and if the content we create is relevant to that hashtag, we can use them and reach more people, as it is already trending.
