Do you know the birthday of Google? And do you know ‘BackRub’ was the first name of the search engine Google? It’s really surprising to hear this question, right? Yeah, even I was surprised on seeing that the search engine was first called ‘BackRub’. Do you know where I found this fact? It looks funny but to be honest I found this on the cover page of my note. Let’s see the true story behind Google’s hilarious name: BackRub. I know many of you aren’t believing that BackRub was Google’s name. But it’s the true story of the Google search engine. Google is mainly used for discovering the needed content. Someitmes by accident if we put our personal information in the website, it would be fetched by google. But there are ways to remove them. This blog is for the people who aren’t aware of the name BackRub and Google’s birthday.
It all began in the year 1997. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, cofounders of Google are big fans of wordplay. This is evident through Page’s explanation of their new language named Alphabet. This strongly shows that they are fans of wordplay. In 1996, Page and Brin were crazy about finding names for their company. As the company was in great progress. They named BackRub first as its analysis of the web’s “backlinks”. They even conducted sessions with other graduates to find out the perfect name for their company. This session includes their friends named Sean Anderson, Tamara Munzner, and Lucas Pereira. And it was held in September of that year. And yeah, September was the birthday month of Google.
And it was Page who decided to change the name as he thought the name BackRub was not good enough. And on the session with Page’s friends, they have decided few names. And Sean Anderson was the one who’s behind this successful name Google. He suggested “googolplex” in a brainstorming session. And it was Page who countered with the shorter one “googol”. A googolplex is 1 followed by googol zeroes whereas googol is 1 followed by 100 zeroes. You may think that where comes google from this? The big name “Google” was born out of a spelling error. Looks funny right but it’s the truth. Anderson checked whether the domain name was taken but accidentally he searched for “google.com” instead of “googol.com”. Page liked that name very much more than googol so he registered the domain name for himself and Brin. It was September 15th of 1997, when google was born. Thus, the birthday of Google.
